About This Site
Lone Oak High School was a secondary educational institution located in the McCracken County community of Lone Oak, approximately five miles south of Paducah, Kentucky. Lone Oak High School was established in 1920, the third of three county high schools in McCracken County after passage of the Kentucky Sullivan School Law in 1908. Since its beginning in 1920 through the last graduating class of 2013, LOHS achieved a level of excellence in the top rankings of the state and the nation.
From 1920 through 1927, LOHS was housed in the former Kentucky Western College located at the NE corner of Friendship and Lone Oak Roads and supported only Grades 9-12. In 1927, the wooden Kentucky Western College building burned, and a new building was erected on a state agricultural station located on what is now Robinson Ave, former College Ave a short distance from the college location. Upon building completion, LOHS housed all 12 grades and began the very long process of consolidating numerous smaller Common Schools scattered around the southern part of McCracken Cty.
Through numerous building projects and expansions, the high school housed all twelve elementary and secondary grades until Lone Oak Elementary School was opened in 1959. During 1966, the 7th and 8th grades moved to the newly opened Lone Oak Upper Elementary School, later called Lone Oak Middle School and from that point, through more fires and renovations, until closing in 2013, LOHS was once again a high school only.
While consolidation of the three county high schools had been a topic of conversation for many years, it finally came to fruition upon the opening of McCracken County High School in the fall of 2013. LOHS, along with Heath and Reidland High Schools were closed. The LOHS facilities became Lone Oak Middle School and grades were shuffled between facilities to even student counts. The secondary educational system in McCracken County had come full circle; from a single high school with many feeder schools in 1908 to a single high school with multiple feeder schools in 2013.
From newspaper articles, annuals, Senior Spotlights, letters and photos, each class has a history even after graduation and each class contributes a piece of the overall history of Lone Oak High School. The focus of this site is to remember, document and make available on line that history, to all who are interested in hopes of preserving and remembering the history of our alma mater.
