1954 Newspapers

Oak-K Newspapers from the 1953-1954 School Year may be found via the menu to the right. According to the issue numbering, we now have all six issues from this school year, although the February 5th issue is quite literally full of holes. However, we are very pleased to have these and many other copies of this historic school newspaper. These issues came from a file cabinet found in the Journalism Department at the high school.

Many changes were occuring at LOHS and across the whole county school system during 1953 and 1954. The building of the AEC plant brought thousands of people to the area and put the entire school system under a lot of strain. Many articles in the Oak-Ks talk about over crowding and how those conditions were being addressed.

Construction began on the new gymnasium and on February 18, 1954 the last ballgame was played in the old gym - in service since 1928. Many other milestones can be read about in these very informative newspapers. We hope you find them enjoyable.
