Lone Oak High School
Class of 1955 Collection

About This Site

The new gymnasium, some called it an arena, was completed over the summer and final touches added as school begin in the fall of 1954. The first assembly of all students, all grades, was held in the new gym in October - something that was to be polite; uncomfortable in the old gym. From the November 24th Oak-K, we have this:

FIRST BALL GAME DRAWS BIG CROWD
The first game of Lone Oak's 1954-55 basketball season was played before a capacity crowd on Friday night, November 12, at the new gymnasium. The gym, as most of you know, is made to seat around 1,750 persons on the bleachers alone. Well, the bleachers were bulging, and a few, who happen to arrive a little late had to stand around the concourse walls.

You'll all agree that the entire ball team, it's coach, and the student body would like to see it that full at every game to come, so lets make them and at the same time support a very fine team, that by the way, won that first game.

The last game was played in the old gym in February of 54, and soon there after renovations of the gym area began to convert the old gym into much needed class rooms. The 1st grade classes were still meeting in the old Canery building which if nothing else, provided them with their own playground. Going to lunch in the newly renovated cafeteria was now a trek through the new gym and under the new covered sidewalks. But at least the walk was dry on wet days.
