Orb Muds his way to victory

The first Saturday in May is one day where Kentucky might actually be the most talked about state in the country. This of course being because of the Kentucky Derby, which just completed its 139th running of “the best two minutes in sports”. The event to me is one of the most spectacular to watch, as this one exciting run can change a horses life and fame forever. Also, the amount of preparation the trainers, jockeys, and horses themselves put into the event is amazing. This is why the race, and really the day as a whole never disappoints. Coming into the race, there were four favorites over the rest of the field: Orb, Goldencents, Verrazano, and Revolutionary.

The track ended up having muddy conditions, due to rain on previous days. This left concerns, as some horses had never raced on a track with these conditions. But there was no turning back, the horses were saddled up, and placed into the starting gate at about 5:30 Central Time.

The race started with no real surprises except that Goldencents, a horse that likes to run up front was in 2nd to the race’s pace setter Palace Malice. The line up didn’t change much during the first half of the race, but then the favorites started to make their run towards the lead. The two real powerhouses Orb and Revolutionary came from the very back, and it would become a foot race to see who could get to the front the quickest. It would end up being Orb, who ran a very clean race, encountering no trouble in his path to victory. Golden Soul, a strong underdog, finished 2nd. He held off Revolutionary, who finished 3rd. Revolutionary was ridden by Calvin Borel, who is known for riding next to the rail and coming from the back to win. But it just was not meant to be this time.

The race was ran in about 2 minutes and 2 seconds. Orb will now be in the history books as a Derby winner, but a new goal arrives with his victory: The Triple Crown. Could this be the 1st horse to win the Crown since 1978? I say yes, because the horse lived up to his “favorite” expectations and though he isn’t a dominant horse, I see few horses this year that are even in his league. It would take a horse running the race of his life to prevent Orb from winning the next two races. It could be interesting to see if Orb has another showdown with Revolutionary. No matter what we will find out if Orb’s magical run will continue in two weeks at the Preakness.
