Sam Querrey played Thomas Byrdech in the round of 16 at the Sony Open on Tuesday. Querrey lost the match 6-1 6-1. This has been the first time since 1985 when the tournament started that an American man hasn’t made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

There were eight Americans in the draw with Sam Querrey and John Isner being the top two. This was Querrey’s first tournament back since he got his spot back above Isner. Statistics show that American players not making it to the quarterfinals in tournaments is starting to become more common.

At the beginning of the first set Querrey was up, but after hitting four forehands long things just started to go all down hill. Querrey’s emotions were expressed when he was seen breaking his racket in frustration.

Isner, who’s ranking has fallen from 13th to 23rd, lost his third round match on Monday to Marin Cillic. Isner’s record as of this year stands at 7-7 but he’s recently been struggling with unforced errors and inconsistency.
