love is in the bears...

...and cards and chocolates...

Regardless of if you’re a hopeless romantic or forever alone, February 14th is still a major holiday celebrated in major ways.  Though some despise it and celebrate via sarcasm, others anticipate the date.  It provides a time to show a certain someone that you care, whether they know it or not.

While simple valentines are sweet, we live in the age of harder, better, faster, stronger, so to some, a cute card won’t cut it.  The present is always evolving, which means presents are always evolving.  These days, it seems as if it’s always revolving around the gifts too.  Starting at the turn of the year, retail stores begin to embellish their establishments, wholeheartedly, to remind consumers that the day of love is approaching.

The classics are still the same: candy, stuffed bears, balloons, cards, flowers, etc.  Nowadays, though, it seems as if nothing is pleasing enough.  The typical crane game bear won’t suffice.  Now, there’s the six foot tall, “Giant Hunka Love Vermont Bear” for $200.  Though Tatianna Gayles (12) says the best Valentine’s Day gift she ever received was “bears, lots of bears.”

The gifts, while necessary and important, are just a materialistic way to express the true reason for the day.  They show you care and that you remembered.  Even if it’s materialistic, we, as people, love materials, and love is what this day is about!
