In Algeria a group of terrorists raided a Gas Plant, taking many hostages. Among those taken captive at the Plant were several Americans. The Algerian military launched a campaign soon after the raid in order to rescue many of the hostages. The Algerian siege was successful with a few casualties to the hostages.

Reports from the siege state that 34 hostages with injured and 14 of the terrorists were killed. Of the nearly 600 hostages taken by the terrorists most of them were freed. The terrorist group raided the Gas Plant as revenge for Algeria allowing the French government to use their air space to access Mali, a country the French government is attempting to aid in the removal of Islamist militants. French President Francois Hollande stated that the raid on the Gas Plant contributed, "further evidence that my decision to intervene in Mali was justified".
