Football for breast cancer

October is breast cancer awareness month.  Nearly 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.  Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in women, and the second leading cause of death for women.  Over 220,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and an estimated of 40,000 will die.

On October 12th, many students at Lone Oak participated in a very active way to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.  Females who signed up with Mrs. Duncan played in a powder puff football game the Friday of our game against North Hopkins.  The teams were coached by seniors Sean Murphy, Kalen Parker, Steven Hulsey and Sean Tate.  The students practiced with their teams on Monday the 8th and Wednesday the 10th from 2:30-3:30.  Before the varsity game, two games were played to determine which teams would play each other in a game at halftime.  Instead, the two games both ended in ties.  So, while originally the two winning teams were going to play at halftime, they instead had two more games at halftime.  But, both games ended in a tie once again.

In order to play, the girls who signed up all had to collect either 3 pledges or donations for breast cancer awareness.  Booths at the game sold cupcakes and bracelets, along with accepting donations.  The money collected from this event totaled to be well over a thousand dollars and was donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a nonprofit organization for breast cancer and hopes to “support missions of all services.”  Their website can be found at http://www.5komen.org which has more information about their organization.
