To Merge Or Not To Merge
Election Day usually marks the time we as citizens choose between candidates running for political office. This year there will be a special race on the ballot for McCracken County citizens involving the decision on whether to make the whole county become merged together as the city of Paducah.
As in all races there are two sides to the argument. Proponents of the merger seem to be outnumbered, but they are sticking by their reasons and ideals as to what the merger would bring. They look at it as an opportunity to bring growth to the community, with some feeling as if we are lagging behind in this area’s population increase. It is also believed that tax dollars would go down for our citizens as a direct relationship to the growth of the community. Examples of nearby cities such as Lexington and Nashville that have recently gone through mergers also help the case of the merger fans, as these communities seem to be thriving, in part because of their decision to join together.
Many people in the countryside of the county take the other stance on this debate. One major reason that people are taking this stance is that they feel they are being taken advantage of. The merger would cause people who could technically be living far outside the city limits of today to pay city taxes. This could be taken by the people against the merger as a sign of greed by city officials or just a way to help gain revenue and get out of debt. Another basic reason is that some citizens simply do not understand the reasoning of this merger. They feel that if they wanted to live in a city then they would be doing so, and it would be preferred if the layout of the city of Paducah stays just as it is now.
No matter what stance you take on this debate, it is important to go to the voting polls and have your voice heard. Every vote counts and your vote could make an impact on our community for years to come.
