Halloween Costumes

With Halloween being around the corner, many of us will spend it not only this year, but in years to come, hanging with friends and family, eating candy, and trick or treating.  One of the best parts of Halloween no matter what age you are, are the costumes.  For one night you can be absolutely anything that you want in the world, whether it be a pirate or a pop star.  But, many people take their costumes over the edge and end up embarrassing themselves in the future.

For those of you confused over whether your costume is appropriate, go with one simple rule: If you wouldn’t wear it in front of your grandmother, don’t wear it at all!  Trust me when I say your family will understand you wanting to show a little bit more skin than normal, or if you want to be funny, but if they say no, that should be the final word.  Remember that your family has your best interest in mind, and they probably know what will cause you embarrassment in the future.  You also have to remember that pictures of you will probably be taken, and you might see yourself on Facebook.  If you’re too embarrassed for a photo to be taken of you, again, your costume is not appropriate.

Speaking of social media, since we already have established photos of you will be taken, imagine looking back at those photos in 20 years.  Since these photos will probably be put on Facebook for the whole world to see, someone such as a future love interest, a future professor, or maybe even a future employer may see it.  This could prevent you from advancing in the future, as in terms of future relationships and careers.  They’ll think that you are immature, promiscuous, just flat out trash and think lower of you.

For one night you can be anything you want, but that does not mean you can wear anything you want.   In high school many of us will make rash decisions in the future we will regret – whether it be relationships, or grades – but do not make a mistake for the rest of your life be something as shallow as a Halloween costume.  You’ll make more mistakes in your life.  Don’t let something like clothing be what haunts you as your worst mistake.
