The Final Holes

It was now the time of the year that all of the golfers had waited for, the regional tournament. This was their one and only chance to shoot a round that would place themselves and their team in the State Tournament. The girls kicked the tournament off on Monday in unchartered territory at Murray Country Club. Though their results proved to be not enough for the team to advance, Senior Erika Edwards stated “that was the most fun I’ve ever had on a golf course.” Anna Hack of Calloway had the best round of the day shooting a 67, as Calloway and Marshall advanced on to state.

Then it was the boys turn to chase a title on Tuesday at Paxton Park. Though many of the players were familiar with the course, strong winds seemed to take an effect on the scores all together. Seniors Zach Roethemeyer and Sean Murphy led the team with scores of 77 and 79, but that proved to be not quite enough to move on to state. Matthew Zakutney of St. Mary won the title by one stroke, as his team as well as Graves get to compete at state.

All of that being said, a shout out needs to be sent to the golf team for a great effort this season. They not only need to be honored for the success they had, but for the fun they had while playing the game they love. As Zach Roethemeyer stated, “it was overall a great experience, we performed well and placed highly in tournaments, and I probably wont ever forget some of my teammates”.
