The Final Chapter: Even though the theme for our last season isn’t exactly fresh, the drive to win sure seems to be. As always drama was stirred up due to the anticipation of the Tilghman game. As if there wasn’t enough tension from the turnout of last year’s game, additional pressure arose when players from Tilghman began to tweet their (derogatory) opinions regarding the match. Now, while the posts weren’t appropriate enough to quote, take my word that they were anything but friendly. When there’s an abundance of tension & emotions are running high, there are few limits when regarding what one is capable of. Taking that one and multiplying it by an entire team, it’s basically unstoppable. The father & veteran of Lone Oak football, coach Haskins, stated, “The rivalry between us and Tilghman has ben one-sided for 23 years now. This is the FInal Chapter and our last opportunity to beat them.”
After being highly anticipated, Saturday night finally came. With 7:36 left in the 1st quarter, Paducah Tilghman scored the first touchdown of the game. The final score was 12 to 28; PT coming out on top. Lone Oak’s TDs were scored by Morgan Alexander (10) and Du’Juan (10).
When you’re not only a rival, but a hated one at that, and you’re dealing with teenage angst, the outcome can’t be expected to be simple. In this case it wasn’t simple or preferable. Though, four 12 minute quarters wasn’t enough time to overcome the opposing team’s rage, Lone Oak isn’t discouraged. Failures serve as reinforcement to better one’s self and losses lead to wins. Throughout the drama, PT degraded themselves by not depending on their game to speak for them. Lone Oak is still the bigger opponent in the sense that we didn’t lower ourselves to their level and remained classy. For that alone, we should have the attitude of winners and go into the rest of the season head strong. Luckily, this isn’t a one-game season and we have many more Friday nights to come!
