“Fail to prepare; prepare to fail,” said Mia Hamm, retired American soccer player. Hamm also stated, “Failure happens all the time. It happens every day in practice. What makes you better is how you react to it.” 2001 and 2002’s Women’s FIFA World Player of the Year is exactly right. Lone Oak’s very own varsity soccer boys have failed, as we all do, except, they’ve persevered and bettered themselves from it.
The first game of the season was against Marshall County, where they were defeated 2 to 0. They then succumbed to University Heights, the final score being 2 to 0, as well. The proceeding weekend, the turn out still wasn’t preferable when they played Graves County, being 2 to 1. Creds to Colin Marshall (12) though, for scoring the first goal of the season.
Tuesday, August 21st, the Flash challenged Paducah Tilghman. By half time, both teams had held the score at 1 to 1; their first goal being a successful PK for Jake Kirkpatrick. With seven minutes remaining in the game, Jake Kirkpatrick takes a shot at the top of the 18 and is instantly knocked down. The goalie was involved in the tackle and while he lay there tangled with Kirkpatrick, the ball rolled a solid 15 feet and reached the net, giving a second goal to the Flash and a win.
When asked his attitude towards the season so far, Skylar Nunley (11) admitted, “We need to step it up.” Zeke Wheat (12) confessed that when they played the always brutal opponent, Marshall, they “weren’t fully prepared” and “didn’t display their full potential.” The loss of the first three games didn’t discourage this team, though, as made clear by Carlos Gonzalez (12) when he asserted, “We are working every day to get better and to make this season the best one, yet.”
Though the majority of the scores haven’t been in their favor when the clocks ran out, it’s still a promising way to start out he season. As proven by their title as last year’s district champs, this team knows how to make the most out of a loss and prepare themselves accordingly.
