Lone Oak track is rounding the final corner of the 2012 season as they go to regionals on May 12th with quite a few accomplishments under their belts. As Lone Oak’s new coach Jesse Byrd states with a smile, “The track team has exceeded my expectations and made tremendous improvements. I am very proud of my team.” Lone Oak girls won the McCracken County championship, placed third at Ballard, and went home with an impressive fourth place ribbon from the Tilghman Invitational. The boys finished second at the Ballard meet.
Ashley Latham (11), a hurdler, feels that “even though we have a new coach and numerous new track members, our season is going very well. We won the county championship, we are placing higher at track meets, and we have improved as a team this year.” The seniors this year are Meagan Murray, Rachel Englert, Ricky Grewelle, Robert Mcnail, Rachel Willingham, Adam Kiser, and Will Graves, who all contributed to this season’s success.
David Clark (11) ran the two mile for the first time in 15:41 and a week later ran it in 13:59, a major personal improvement that greatly benefits the team. Courtney Grewelle (10), known for her endurance and unbelievable times in the distance races, ran her shortest mile in 5:49 and her brother Ricky Grewelle (12) ran his mile in 4.56. Landon Chambers (9) ran his 100 meter sprint in 11.65 seconds as Gracen Wheat (10) ran her 100 meter in 14 seconds flat.
Lone Oak track has made significant improvements and is looking forward to the competition at regionals and their advancement to state that will soon follow. Good luck!
