Although not many people keep up with tennis or go to matches, the girls tennis team still defeats their competition within the region handily.  Last year, the girls were state runner ups and regional champions.  Last year’s regional title marked the girls’ 26th consecutive regional championship.

After losing only two seniors to graduation (Kylie Tillett and Dakota Durrett), the girls will have a strong team again this year.  Returning this year are Haley Dallas (12), Elizabeth Skinner (12), Michelle McKamey (7), Ashton Farmer (11), Erika Rust (11), and Brenna Adams (9), all of which have a lot of varsity experience and most competed in the state tournament last year.

In their first match of the season on March 9th against Elizabethtown, the girls brought home a victory.  The girls continued their winning streak by beating Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, Lexington Christian Academy, and Calloway County.  Given this strong start, Farmer (11) is excited about the season, “We are one of the top 3 teams in the state, and it’s our turn to win a state title.”

Lone Oak is expected to be undefeated in the region with perhaps the 3 best players in the region being Lone Oak’s 1 seed McKamey, 2 seed Dallas and 3 seed Skinner.  Even though the season has just begun, Skinner is looking toward the goal, “We’re working hard to win state.”

Lone Oak will have a very vigorous schedule over spring break, traveling to Chattanooga and Murfreesboro, playing some of the best tennis programs in the tri-state area such as Baylor, Girls Preparatory School, and Oakland High School.

For students looking for a team to follow, LOHS girls tennis is a sure bet and worth lending support to.

“Lone Oak should meet in the finals.”
