Evening of the Arts, a night of entertainment organized by LOHS art teacher Shand Stamper, showcases the talents of culinary, art, and music students. This year on April 19th, many students, parents, and teachers gathered at the central office to listen to the winsome tones of the concert choir, taste the mouthwatering food of the culinary department, and gaze at the wonderful pieces from the art students.

Ashley White arranges for the food. According to White, “The culinary classes prepared cupcakes and cookies for this year’s Evening of the Arts. My classes work all year to develop the skills needed to cater, and Evening of the Arts is their opportunity to show off these skills. This year we made cupcakes that looked like owls and flowers, toffee mocha cupcakes, peanut butter chip cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, and cookies and cream cookies.”

Many awards were handed out to the art students for paintings, drawings, printmaking, sculpture, pottery, and jewelry. Bionca Hazen (10) painted an old empty wine bottle to enter into the contest. Hazen said, “On it is painted something I like to call ‘Last of the American Girls,’ which is an idea I got from a Green Day song with the same title. With Mrs. Stampers’ help, I have been accepted into two awesome art colleges, and I plan on pursuing my art career.” Prizes were given out to many deserving students and were as follows: Best 2-D went to Emily Followell (12), Best 3-D to Caitlin Rudolph (11), Best Painting to James Roberts (12), AP Art award of merit to Alec Valerius (12), 3-D award of merit to Anna Sohl (11), Best Metal Smithing to Rashmitha Edem (12), 2-D award of merit to Zac Thacker (10), Art 1 Award of Merit to Madeline Williams (9), and finally the Art 2 Award of Merit went to Ansley Sims (10). Patrons could take home art in the form of hand made mugs which were sold by The Art Club.

The entertainment was well supplied by the music department. Mr. Thornton's choir performed several musical selections for the crowd. Students who participated in Poetry Out Loud also performed spoken word, and there were several students who took advantage of an open mic opportunity during the performance schedule. The coffee house feel from the inaugural year remained in tact.

Hopefully, this event continues to grow and next year’s Evening of the Arts will be even more awesome. Art, Food, and Music are just a few more things Lone Oak High School should be known for!
