Ever since Iron Man, which first hinted at an Avengers movie in a post-credits scene, comic book fans (such as myself) and normal people alike have been anticipating an Avengers movie for a while. Then came Captain America, which teased us with the first trailer for Avengers at the end of the credits. The question everyone is asking, however, is whether or not this movie was worth four long years of hype. Let me answer that - It was well worth the wait.
The movie is filled to the brim with hilarity and action. The director, Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame, brings his signature humor to the film. Many of the laughs come from the nigh-constant bickering between the heroes themselves. There’s Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the sarcastic billionaire playboy; Captain America (Chris Evans), the super-soldier from WWII; Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Norse god of thunder; Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), an ex-Russian spy with a murky history; Bruce Banner (Mark Rufallo), who no one likes when he’s angry; and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), an archer who could give Robin Hood a run for his money. The action is more-or-less the same as the previous films, though this isn’t necessarily a negative. Watching Thor and Iron Man duke it out, or the Hulk and Thor tearing away at each other, is always a treat.
The Avengers delivers where it counts. Be it Hulk arbitrarily punching Thor after the pair take down a giant alien-invader-worm thing, Iron Man calling Captain America a “capsicle,” or the epic beatdown between Loki and Captain America, Avengers just simply works. Marvel certainly has a strong future in film.
