Peyton Manning’s situation has proven that nobody is safe in the NFL. As a four time MVP, leading the Colts to two Super Bowls and even winning it all in 2007, he was released from the Indianapolis Colts three weeks ago after 13 years. Right away, Manning was approached by the Titans, the 49ers, and the Broncos, but kept very quiet about his decision concerning which team he would lead in the 2012 NFL season.
After working out for the Tennessee Titans and the 49ers during the week of March 12, Peyton finished off showing out for Denver Friday afternoon at Duke University in North Carolina. All of the coaches saw enough to satisfy. Let’s be honest, Peyton Manning doesn’t have to do much to demonstrate his skills. He’s arguably the best quarterback to ever play the game. Sources suggested that Manning favored the Broncos and the owners and coaches were obviously interested. Vice President of Denver Football Operations, John Elway, even tweeted, “We enjoyed visiting with Peyton today in NC. He threw the ball great and looked very comfortable out there. Watching him throw today was the next step in this important process for our team and Peyton.”
After what seemed to be a sufficient amount of time to come to a well thought out decision, Manning finalized his contract negotiations with Denver on March 19th and is now on his way to Mile High Stadium to play for the Denver Broncos. Peyton will be surrounded by some great playmakers like Dandre Goodwin and Eric Decker, who led the team in receiving yards last season during the Broncos’ amazing comeback and run to playoffs.
But what about the man he is replacing? Tim Tebow became a hero during last year’s season and some Bronco fans find it upsetting that he is being booted out so unceremoniously. Tim Tebow was traded to the New York Jets shortly after the signing of Peyton Manning. These events remind us that the National Football League is not a sport; it’s a business.
