Syrian Unrest Intensifies

Tens of thousands of Syrians started to protest on the tenth of February, in what is being called the “Russia Is Killing Our Children” protest. Early this month Russia and China vetoed a United Nations proposal that would have condemned a brutal crackdown that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad authorized. This crackdown was originally intended to deal with a nearly year long revolution in Syria but according to many human rights organizations al-Assad supporters have murdered innocents and tortured many including children.

The protests were organized by anti-government groups after reports came in that troops in tanks had stormed a suburb in Homs that was being used to give refuge to people fleeing the fighting in the city.

All of this came on the same day that Syrian state TV accused terrorists of a bombing in Aleppo that killed at least twenty-five people and wounded over a hundred others. A member of opposition group inside of Aleppo described hearing two explosions and what sounded like a gunfight near a military hospital.

The United States has called for the creation of a group called “Friends of Democratic Syria” which will support a free Syria. Turkey has offered to host a gathering on the Syrian issue and already hosts the headquarters of the opposition’s rebel army.
