Don't Hire 'The Sitter'.

Jonah Hill tried. While I can't say the same about the rest of the cast, Jonah Hill tried his hardest to make his new film, The Sitter, a humorous one. The film follows the exploits of Noah (Hill), an unmotivated slacker who takes on a babysitting job for some extra money. After agreeing to make a drug run for his girlfriend, Noah packs up the children he's babysitting and off they go to have wacky adventures. Despite this obviously hilarious plot, The Sitter was a painful movie to sit through, filled with cringe-worthy moments, very few laughs, and bad acting.

The first problem with the film is probably the comedy itself. While there were a few laughable parts in the film, the majority of the jokes just made the audience feel awkward, if not downright embarrassed. Take the scene where Noah has to buy new underwear for the little girl. Instead of just skipping this scene altogether, they fill it with pedophile joke after pedophile joke. As if pedophilia is even a joking matter.

Another problem with this film is the actors. Take seasoned actor Sam Rockwell, who plays a crazed drug dealer. Both he and Hill have their funny moments, but the rest of the actors kill any mood that two may have set. Like when Hill and Rockwell meet together on-screen for the first time. Noah has to buy drugs for his girlfriend from Rockwell's character, Karl. Just when the scene starts to get funny, one of the kids walks in and makes the scene awkward.

Maybe this had to do with the lack of experience from the children actors. Max Records plays the studious and very neurotic Slater but has starred in only four films previous to The Sitter. This film appears to be the first one for the other child stars, Landry Bender and Kevin Hernandez.

Despite Hill's and Rockwell's attempts to salvage this film, the flick still just doesn't work. Be it awkward jokes or bad acting from inexperienced actors, this is one film you definitely should sit out.
