Lone Oak High School’s own Shelby Schaefer was selected to be the Lion’s Club Student of the Month for September, as well as Junior Rotarian for November!  Students for Lion’s Club and Junior Rotarian are selected based on academic as well as extracurricular accomplishments and activities.

Shelby Schaefer is a shining star, both in her character and in her community.  Not only does this scintillating senior have a difficult course schedule under her belt - AP Lang, AP German, AP US, AP Calculus, and AP English Literature & Composition - she also has a whopping 4.0 GPA and an ACT score of 29.  But her outstanding achievements don’t end here - she takes the stage as one of the most involved members of our student body.

Schaefer has been Class President all four years of high school.  She has been in Beta Club for 3 years and is Community Service Coordinator this year.  Her freshman year, she won 1st place in German reading in the regional Foreign Language Festival and won 3rd place in the Rotary Speech Contest.  Shelby has run track and cross country throughout middle and high school.  She represented the team last weekend as LOHS ran in the state competition for cross country - the team placed 12th out of 26 of the best teams in Kentucky.  Her accomplishments earned her a place in the Governor’s Scholars Program, a five-week intensive program geared toward high-caliber students like herself.

Shelby is also heavily involved with St. Mary’s Youth Group in Anna, Illinois.  With her youth group, she takes care of a room at the Hospitality House.  People with family members in prison can stay at the Hospitality House for a low price.  In addition to adopting families at Christmas, she has been an active volunteer at her Vacation Bible School since 7th grade, this year teaching the pre-K and Kindergarten classes.  After school, she volunteers at the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club as a tutor.  For three months, she worked with their satellite program at LOMS, tutoring middle schoolers in homework, playing games, and participating in physical activity.  She was MC for the “Dig Pink” volleyball games in 2010.

LOHS English teacher Ellen Powless said, “Shelby Schaefer is a blessing to have in class!”  With Shelby’s always sunny disposition, it’s not hard to see why.  Congratulations on your honors of Lion’s Club Student of the Month and Junior Rotarian!
