Occupy Wall Street Protests

On the 13th of July, the Canadian-based group Adbusters Media Foundation made a post on their website adbusters.org, telling people to flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, and protest peacefully.  The statement from Adbusters called for President Obama to ordain a Presidential Commission and end the corrosive influence of money in Washington.

When the protests began on the 17th of September, they consisted of only a few hundred people speaking about socioeconomic inequality and corporate greed in America. Now, only a few weeks later, thousands of people are taking part in the protests and hundreds have been arrested for disturbing the peace.

In an interview with nydailynews.com, Dwayne Henry, a protester, said he “feels like the protests are the next step” and that he “needs to be there in order to make a difference in the way the world is.”

According to a Associated Press-GfK poll, over half of all Americans are furious about our current political climate. Another poll states that thirty seven percent of Americans support the Occupy Wall Street protests. President Obama addressed the protesters by saying that they reflect the "broad-based frustration about how our financial system works.”

One of the things the protesters clearly want is a discussion about what they think is wrong with our current system, which they claim is run by banks. On the official Occupy Wall Street website, occupywallst.org, they claim that they will continue protesting indefinitely until they remove the influence of banks and corporations from Washington.

Now, only a few weeks later, thousands of people are taking part in the protests and hundreds have been arrested for disturbing the peace.
