Maria Miller was selected as the Junior Rotarian for the month of October. Miller’s 3.98 cumulative GPA is no small feat, considering she has taken a plethora of AP Classes throughout her high school career, such as AP World History, AP United States History, AP Language and Composition, AP Chemistry and AP French. She is currently taking three AP classes in her senior year: AP Literature and Composition, AP Calculus, and AP Biology. Miller excelled on her AP Language and AP Chemistry exams last year, scoring a 5 and a 4, respectively. Miller is an Honors Student and has been in the French Club for three years. She was selected for the honorable position of Editor-in-Chief of the Lone Oak High School newspaper, the News Flash, this year. Miller attended the Governor’s School for the Arts at Transylvania University this past summer and studied New Media, though she was accepted into the Governor’s Scholar Program as well.
Despite her substantial academic workload, Miller is active in her church and community. She attends First Presbyterian Church and sings in both the youth and adult choirs. Miller is heavily involved in the artistic community as well. She has been in over 25 Market House productions, including the starring roles of the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, and Charlotte in Charlotte’s Web. She volunteers as a teaching assistant for Footlights acting classes every Saturday morning, co-founded the Lone Oak High School female a cappella group the Crescendos, has her own portrait photography business, and plays the french horn. A major accomplishment of hers is that she was a soloist at the American Choral Director’s Association National Women’s Honor Choir 2011.
Miller’s future plans include attending college and majoring in either Theatre Education or Chemistry Education. Lone Oak High School’s very own chemistry extraordinaire, Tim Whitley, has many kind and alliterative words to say about Miller: “Maria Miller is a most melodic and memorable merrymaker.” Her outstanding work ethic, fabulous artistic talent, and cheerful manner make her an excellent choice for this month’s Junior Rotarian.
