Civil War Continues in Libya

The rebellion in Libya continues with the rebels pushing towards Bani Walid, Sirte, Jufra, and Sabha. Their efforts are focusing on Bani Walid and Sirte, the last pro-Gadafi strongholds in Libya, while Gadafi is nowhere to be found. Though in hiding, he has pledged to wage a guerilla war on the rebels and NATO troops.

Both Sirte and Bani Walid have been under attack for over two weeks, and while the rebels have been repelled so far, momentum is still with the rebels. One rebel Mohammed Ahmed said, “We are going in. We finally have the orders. God is greatest. God willing, Bani Walid will be free today.” Currently, though, the rebels are under fire as they try to take Bani Walid.

RAF (Royal Air Force) recently carried out its biggest raid on Gadafi’s troops, destroying more than twenty targets in one day. The African Union recently recognized the rebels as the new Libyan leaders, while their ex-leader, Gaddafi, warned that NATO’s protection couldn’t last indefinitely. Meanwhile, President Obama stated it would be Libyans who would build their new nation.

While Libya seems to have a new group of leaders, the fighting seems to go on and on. Already talk about rebuilding the Libyan area is occurring including asking help from the United Nations. The end of the war may be in sight, but not without more bloodshed.

“‘We are going in. We finally have the orders. God is greatest. God willing, Bani Walid will be free today.’”
