The Homecoming Reign

On September 9th at 6:15, light showers fell as LOHS students waited to hear Nicole Walker and Nikolas Anderson announced as Queen and King, respectively. While twelve deserving seniors, only two would leave with crowns.  Great applause reverberated across Flash Field as Walker and Anderson walked forward through the rain to accept their crown, flowers, and sash.

Both Anderson and Walker admitted to being surprised when they heard their names called. “I didn’t expect anything,” Nick said.  Being a profound student and sheer genius (See last month’s article about his perfect score on the ACT), Nick is not only a respected but beloved member of the LOHS student body. Of the king, Nicole said, “I’m really glad he won; he definitely deserved it. He works really hard and I feel that he’s a good representative of our school.”

Nicole herself is an adequate representative of the senior class. A softball player and cross-country runner as well as an avid member of the Lone Oak First Baptist youth group, Nicole is never seen without a smile on her face and kind word to say. She is Beta Club secretary and a member of FCA. Her dedication to various activities make her a well-rounded, worthy recipient of the Homecoming crown.

Due to the distance of their colleges from Paducah, last year’s football king and queen, Callie Smith and Cody Longsworth, were unable to attend the ceremony to carry on the tradition of the previous Homecoming King and Queen crowning their successors. However, Nick and Nicole were awarded their crowns and sashes by Assistant Principals Angie Woods and Matthew Houser.

Though rain fell on the ceremony, the reign of the royalty elected was not phased. Granted, “It was really hard to look pretty in the rain,” Nicole commented, “you just had to pretend it wasn’t there to take pictures.” All showers aside, the evening was delightful.
