Senior night, perhaps one of the most important games of the season, couldn’t have gone much better for the boys soccer team this year. It took the team a little while to warm up and the score was tied at the half but in the second half, Lone Oak held St. Mary to zero goals and added 3 goals for the home team resulting in a 4-1 win for the Flash on senior night. Craig Green (12), had a hat trick and Collin Marshall (11) scored as well. After the game all the seniors enjoyed their time in the spotlight as they got recognized for the time they put into the soccer program.
With the 2011 regular soccer season almost over and tournament play fast approaching, it’s been nothing short of a successful season. Co-captain Parker Throgmorton (12) said, “The season is going pretty well so far, although we are losing games, we are constantly improving our game and we will be ready for the playoffs- there is no doubt we will be ready for the playoffs.” With a 6-5 record, the team has played enough games against enough talented teams to make a run at a regional title. One of the most talented teams Lone Oak has beaten might be Fort Campbell and they also competed in close matches with other good teams around the region such as Heath and Tilghman.
Lone Oak has struggled throughout the season but continues “bouncing back from losses” according to Throgmorton. Some losses might be a result of being “lazy and unfocused at times,” according to Casey Harbin (10.) Playing a varsity sport as an underclassmen can sometimes be stressful and can cause a lot of pressure. When asked about what kind of pressure he deals with, Harbin responded, “There is pressure because you want to live up to the expectations set by the older guys and coaches.” Harbin has high expectations for the team this year. “From the teams we have played, we are the best around. We just have trouble playing up to our full potential.”
The playoffs start October 10. All Lone Oak High School students are encouraged to come out and support the team during districts which will be held at Tilghman’s Jetton Field.
