1965 Elementary Memories

The pictures and memories supplied prior to the Class of 65's 50th Reunion also included items from earlier years, including the 6th and 8th Grade at Lone Oak. That would have been the 1958-1959 school year while the 6th grade was still located at the High School building and the 1960-1961 school year for the 7th and 8th grade.

6th Grade

Wow! So long ago. The Class of 65 was in the sixth grade in the 1958-1959 school year. A period during the life of Lone Oak High School that the hallways were really getting crowded and one year before the opening of Lone Oak Elementary School for grades 1 through 6. At LOHS for this year, there were three 6th grade teachers; Mrs Rue, Mrs Harris and Mrs Alderson. All meeting on the 1st floor of the High School building just east of the main stairway, well out of the hourly stampede of the upper classes.

One of these pictures is a newspaper image of Mre Rue. The other two images show boys and girls of the 6th grade for that year with the indication, in the descriptions on the prints, these 44 students were all in Mrs Rue's class. Unbelievable, but as early as 53, the elementary grades held well over 100 kids each, 10 years later and with growth in the community, having 44 students in one class is very possible. The enrollment for all 12 grades at LOHS for this year was over 1300 students - do the math. The limitation lying in the availability of classroom space in the old building. There were some classes meeting up the street at the Lone Oak Baptist Church building. At the LOES the next year, there were four 6th grade classes.

You may click on the pictures for a larger view and a list of those shown, but to make it easier, below is a list for each one.

8th Grade Graduation 1961

Here is a trivia question: Do you remember your 8th grade graduation? Do you remember the 8th grade? If you are class of 65, below is a clue.

8th Grade Ballteam and Cheerleaders

Organized Basketball teams begin in the 8th grade prior to the opening of the Elementary School with some skilled 7th graders allowed to play. After the opening of LOES, the 7th and 8th grades combined to make one of more Junion High teams. 8th Grade and Junior High teams had their own league among rival schools. The pictures below are of the Class of 65's 8th grade ball teams and cheerleaders. These are compliments of Terry and Carolyn Grimes Massa.
